How internet-based calling works
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. A compatible service carries communication over an internet connection rather than tying it to a traditional physical phone line.
For an app-managed line, reliable internet and the supported app are part of the setup. The service and selected number define which calling and messaging functions are available.
Use a separate number for personal conversations
A personal second line can help keep everyday and occasional conversations apart without replacing the main SIM. In supported communication through a selected DualLine line, the recipient sees that line's number.
DualLine's personal lines are for manually composed, personal one-to-one communication. Business support, promotional campaigns, bulk and automated messaging are outside this product's use.
Check SMS and verification separately
Calling capability does not establish that a number supports every SMS or account-verification service. Number type, country and the receiving service's rules matter.
For WhatsApp, choose the intended OTP route or a suitable mobile eSIM number rather than treating a recurring VoIP line as the same product. The WhatsApp-specific route is available through DualLine one-time codes.
Compare VoIP, mobile eSIM and one-time codes
Start with the access you need: ongoing personal communication, mobile connectivity or one code.
| Choice | Connection or delivery | Capability to check |
|---|---|---|
| Personal second line | Managed inside DualLine over internet | Country, number, calling/SMS and subscription conditions |
| Mobile eSIM | Profile installed in a compatible phone | Data, number, carrier SMS/calls and package duration |
| One-time OTP | Code delivered for a selected service | Service/country route and temporary waiting window |
Read billing and access conditions
Review the subscription period, final displayed price and selected line's features before purchasing. Second-line subscriptions, verification credits and travel eSIM packages have different billing arrangements.
A number subscription does not create permanent number ownership or a mobile data allowance. For emergency calls, keep access to a traditional service that supports them where you are.
Your take-away checklist
- Choose the communication or verification task.
- Check country and number capabilities.
- Prepare reliable internet for an app-managed line.
- Read price, subscription and access conditions.
- Use the WhatsApp-specific product when needed.
- Keep a suitable emergency-calling service.
Common questions
Does a VoIP number need a physical SIM?
An app-managed number service can work over internet without replacing the main SIM. A mobile eSIM is a different product installed on the phone.
Do all VoIP numbers receive SMS?
Messaging capability depends on the number and service. Check the selected line rather than inferring SMS support from its appearance.
Can I use DualLine lines for business messaging?
DualLine personal lines are for manual, personal one-to-one communication; they are not business support, campaign or bulk-messaging products.
Does an OTP number have the same capabilities?
No. A one-time OTP purchase provides a service-specific, temporary receive-only verification attempt.
Which product provides travel data?
Choose a travel eSIM package on a compatible phone. A personal second-line subscription does not include mobile data.
